Green Oaks Golf Club
January 26, 2007

From the Manager's Desk

Brent Johnson has resigned as the General Manager of Green Oaks effective immediately. For the foreseeable future, the Board of Directors will assume the administrative control of the Pro-shop and lounge operations. Please contact Mr. Gene Davenport if you have any problems or questions relating to the operation of the course.

The next couple of months are traditionally slow months in the golf course business. Therefore, during times of inclement weather, the Pro-shop may close early. There may also be some adjustments in the lounge hours as well. Please call to verify that the section you wish to use is open during inclement weather. Thank you for your cooperation while we strive to keep our club operating in a profitable manner.

IMPORTANT: Our annual membership meeting is only a couple of months away (April). It is time to start thinking about nominations for the Board of Directors. We need members to step up and commit themselves to serve on the Board of Directors.  There will be three (3) vacancies on the board of Directors that will need to be filled. If you would like to have your name on the ballot, drop a note to Mr. Davenport requesting your name be placed on the ballot. There are several items that need to be voted on by the general membership so it is important that we get maximum participation at the annual meeting (3 April 2007 @ 07:00Pm). We the members of the Board also need you opinions of how you feel things are going and what can be done to improve the current program. Remember, if you don’t vote you leave the decisions up to others.

From the Course Superintendent: The following is an exert from the USGA Magazine about cart path usage;

Question: Why does our superintendent recommend keeping carts on the cart Path and off the fairways in the winter even though the course is dry (Alabama).

Answer: The Bermuda grass on your golf course cannot repair itself from traffic during the times of the year when it is dormant (brown). Keeping carts on the paths helps to minimize the beaten-down worn-out appearance so often associated with Bermuda grass fairways in late winter. Keeping carts on the path in the winter rewards the golfer with more “cushion” underneath the ball.

Another reason is because the winters are the wettest part of the year here in Mississippi and some people just don’t seem to care about what they do to the course. Next time you play, look around at the ruts made by some player who was too good to abide by the Cart Path only sign. Their inconsiderate acts cost time and money to repair. The course superintendent tries to look out for the entire membership and not just a select few. Please to adhere to the cart paths only signs and make the course a better place to play year round.

Steak Nights: February 1st and 15th will be steak nights at Green Oaks. Bring a steak and join the fun and fellowship.
